Questions: Destination Weddings

Having shot weddings in many destinations around the world, we are no strangers to travel. In fact, we’d have to say it’s one of our favourite parts of the job!

Here are some of the most common questions regarding bringing us along with you on your destination wedding. If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch and we’d be happy to help.

Do you stay for a week or just a couple days?

Minimum requirement is usually 6 nights for the wedding and trash the dress session, or 4 nights for either just wedding coverage or a trash the dress. I like to be there a minimum of one full day before the wedding or trash the dress to get familiar with everything, if possible. Most often I stay for a full week when traveling to Caribbean destinations as it’s much easier and cheaper when booking full week packages. If you are not staying at all all-inclusive, please contact me to discuss the best timeline.

Do you shoot the wedding and the TTD?

Most of my clients hire me to shoot both for the full experience, however I am available to photograph just one of those sessions.

How many destinations or weddings have you shot and how many years have you been working as a photographer?

I have shot over 250 local weddings, and more than 25 destination weddings since 2004.

Where have you traveled to shoot weddings?

St. Lucia, Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Bahamas, Kenya, Las Vegas and Arizona so far!
I’m always excited to shoot in new locations around the world, or even within Canada! You can see my wish list below!

You haven’t shot at my wedding location before – how will you know where to take us for photos?

I will research online before going to any location and provided I arrive a minimum of one day before your ceremony (as recommended), I will make sure to scout the wedding venue ahead time as well.
I love shooting at new venues and locations as it gives me a clear vision to be creative! Out of the last 25+ destinations, only three have been repeated locations.

How do we choose where to take photos? Can we leave the resort?

Research! I will spend time looking over maps and researching online to find the most unique places to go with my couples. I will also check into costs and travel time to ensure the day will run as smoothly as possible when going off resort. Generally on the wedding day there isn’t time to leave the resort for photos, but we try and make good use of the wedding location/resort and we leave the fun stuff for the Trash the Dress session. Your TTD session can be as short as a couple hours or as long as a whole day. We always have options and will have our couples give us feedback on what they would like to do.

Why should we bring someone instead of hiring the resort or package photographer?

There are definite advantages to bringing your own photographer with you:

  • You get to choose the person based on their style and/or price. The resort photographer is provided to you and you usually don’t often get a choice with who, what or how they do things.
  • Resort photographers can be very expensive for what you get and sometimes are not worth it. In some cases you pay a base package and then pay per photo on top of that for very limited coverage.
  • If you are local to the photographer, you can meet them before to make sure you’re a good fit, or at least chat on the phone/Skype beforehand to discuss your wedding plans.
  • Most photographers who travel with you offer a more inclusive package that includes the wedding day coverage and trash the dress, whereas some resort photographers only come for the ceremony and some photos after and no coverage of the getting ready or reception.
  • Once you leave the resort, a resort photographer won’t be able to help you in the same way. What if something happens to your disk? What if you want albums or have further questions?

In the end, it’s the couple decision as to how important photography is to them. Looking back 30+ years from now, you will want to have beautiful photographs of your wedding day to show to your children and grandchildren. The biggest regret most people have about their wedding is not taking the time and money to hire the right photographer for their day.

Do you offer video as well?

Yes! Through my partner company, North South Films, I offer a discounted package for photography + highlight video coverage. Please contact me for more information.

How far in advance do I need to reserve my date?

As I tell all couples, the sooner the better! Wedding dates book up fast, sometimes 12+ months in advance. Since a destination takes up more than just one day, it’s important to book once you know your wedding and travel dates, especially during peak wedding season (May-October).

We don’t live locally and really want to talk/meet our photographer before? Can we do this over the phone or Skype?

Absolutely! I would love to talk or meet you and answer all your questions. I’m available in person by appointment at my home studio in Ajax, or phone/Skype. Feel free to contact me to set up a day and time.

Won’t I ruin my expensive wedding dress during the Trash the Dress?

Most dresses used in trash the dress sessions are not harmed in any way. I’ve had many brides wear or resell their dresses after the session. They get a little dirty, but no more then on a typical wedding day. It all depends on how crazy or tame we go for your session. Some water sessions even leave the dress cleaner then when we started. Some brides use the same dress as their wedding, some have a second dress. Luckily there are lots of inexpensive options if you are nervous about using your wedding dress for the session. Many online retailers have options to buy brand new, custom sized wedding dresses for under $250. I have bought some myself for shoots, so I’d be happy to share my knowledge and point you in the right direction if that’s the way you would like to go.

Can we also hire you to shoot our engagement/other session outside Canada?

Absolutely! I’m available to go anywhere for any photography session/project! Drop me a line and we can discuss more!

What other sessions do you offer? (engagement, boudoir, family, etc)

I offer engagement sessions, boudoir, and family/lifestyle sessions anywhere in the world. If you have guests who may be interested in booking during your wedding week, they are welcome to get in touch to find out details and secure their session.
